Nintendo DS

**The Introduction of the Nintendo DS and DS Lite**

The Nintendo DS is a games console created by Nintendo that was first released in 2004. The fact that the console has two screens was a new concept to gaming, especially as one is a touch screen, operated by a stylus. In March 2006, the DS Lite was introduced to the market; this was a smaller, lighter version of the original Nintendo DS, and also a brighter screen for better visibility.

**Hardware Specifications**

Mass: 275 grams
Physical size: 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.9 mm
Screens: Two separate 3-inch LCD screens, resolution of 256 x 192 pixels each, with dimensions of 62 x 46 mm and 77 mm diagonal, and a dot pitch of 0.24 mm. The lower display is overlaid with a resistive touch screen, which allows for touch contact with the screen (either with the included stylus, the player's finger, or the wrist strap's thumb pad) to be registered.
CPUs: Two ARM processors, an ARM946E-S main CPU and ARM7TDMI co-processor at clock speeds of 67 MHz and 33 MHz respectively, with 4 MB of main memory which requires 1.65 volts.

**Starting Up**

When the DS is turned on, the user is presented with a health and safety warning; by the touch of a button, or by touching the screen, the user can access the next screen where the following can be accessed:

DS Game-The user can play the game which has been inserted in the back of the console.

GBA Game-The user can choose to play a Game Boy game which has been inserted in the second slot at the bottom of the console.

Pictochat-This enables the user to chosse 1 of 4 chat rooms where they can chat with any user within range of their DS. You write your messages by tapping the keys on the provided keyboard, or by using the stylus to draw letters.

Download Play-Selected game titles feature the 'Download Play' feature, where people can play wireleslly with people who are within a range of about 60 feet. In some cases, only one cartridge is needed, no matter how many people are playing.

**Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection**

This service was launched in November 2005 in America, and is basically a way of communicating and playing selected DS games online with anybody across the world. A wireless internet connection needs to be within range of the DS, but you can play a variety of games for free across the world, without the need for any wires.

This has been a popular feature of the DS console.

**Examples of Games**

Mario Kart DS
Animal Crossing: Wild World
FIFA 07
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Nintendogs (Variety of versions)
The Sims 2
New Super Mario Bros.
Stormbreaker
Bust a Move
Big Brain Academy

**Overall**

The DS truly is one of Nintendo's greatest inventions; there is so much technology packed into one small console, and they have tried things which have never been done before: they have created a console with two screens, one of which is touch operated. This was thogught to be strange, but now people wonder how they coped without it; you can also play games over the internet for free without any wires, and you can pay with anyone across the world. The wide variety of games also makes the DS one of the best consoles ever to be invented.

Truly a great console.
